The newspapers, pamphlets, and books gathered by the Reverend Charles Burney (1757-1817) represent the largest and most comprehensive collection of early English news media. The present digital collection, that helps chart the development of the concept of news and newspapers and the free press, totals almost 1 million pages and contains approximately 1,270 titles. Many of the Burney newspapers are well known, but many pamphlets and broadsides also included have remained largely hidden.

1838-2001.  The Times of India is the world’s largest circulation English daily newspaper.  Founded in 1838 to serve the British residents of West India, The Times of India now circulates more than 4 million copies, covering almost 8 million readers. Originally this paper was British owned, but since Independence, has been owned by The Times of India Group. The Times of India is particularly valuable for its coverage of key historical events in India, including the rise of Gandhi’s Civil Disobediance movement, the 1947 Independence and Partition through to the landmark date of 1998 when Pakistan became a nuclear power.  Titles include - Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce (1839-1859), Bombay Times and Standard (1860-1861), and the Times of India (1861-2001)
