The Center for Research Libraries' collection of African-related resources contains a wide variety of newspapers, monographs, archival collections, serials, government publications, and dissertations, spanning four centuries and covering virtually every country in Africa. Significant country strengths include South Africa, Nigeria, Senegal, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.Note: Access to the general CRL catalog is available to all. Historical Abstracts
Historical Abstracts covers the history of the world (excluding the United States and Canada) from 1450 to the present, including world history, military history, women`s history, history of education, and more.
International Bibliography of the Social Sciences
Coverage: 1951-present. An online resource for social science and interdisciplinary research. For book reviews, search title of book and REVIEW in Publication Type.
JSTOR
Coverage: varies. Includes over one thousand leading academic journals as well as select monographs and other materials valuable for academic work. Journals are always included from volume 1, issue 1 and include previous titles. Beginning in 2011, current issues for more than 150 journals will be available on JSTOR as part of the Current Scholarship Program.
PAIS International
Coverage: 1915-present. Covers all aspects of public affairs including political science, sociology, health, etc. with an international view. Coverage includes foreign language materials and some U.S. congressional documents. Includes references previously contained in the PAIS Archive.
African Women`s Bibliographic Database
Coverage: 1986-present. The database indexes books and government documents; articles appearing in edited books; periodical and journal articles; Masters theses and Ph.D. dissertations as well as a few B.A. theses and honors papers; conference papers; and videocassettes.
Africana Periodical Literature Bibliographic Database
Coverage: varies by title. Articles from English language and multi-lingual journals and periodicals that specialize in African Studies or consistently cover the African continent.
eHRAF World Cultures
Coverage: 1997-present. Scholarly journals, books, research reports, and dissertations on anthropology, sociology, ethnology, and culture with an emphasis on non-Western cultures. formerly titled: eHRAF Collection of Ethnography
Humanities & Social Science Index Retrospective
Coverage: 1907-1984. Allows search of a wide range of important journals in the humanities and social sciences.
Encyclopedia of Africa
2010 ed. Edited by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and Kwame Anthony Appiah. This encyclopedia is comprised of entries focusing on African history and culture.
The articles cover prominent individuals, events, trends, places, political movements, art forms, business and trade, religions, ethnic groups, organizations, and countries throughout Africa. In-depth articles examine contemporary nations of sub-Saharan Africa, ethnic groups from various regions of Africa, and European colonial powers. Two hundred illustrations and demographic sidebars further guide and inform research.
New Encyclopedia of Africa
2008 ed. Addresses the entire history of African cultures from the pharaohs and the ancient civilizations of the south through the colonial era to the emergence of 53 independent countries, some of them newly emergent in world commerce and others deep in conflict. All major trends in African philosophy, political theory, and religion will be covered, as well as significant historical figures and social movements.
The encyclopedia is a nice complement to our other well-regarded reference works in African and African American history and culture. It provides background into the intellectual traditions that have shaped this history and culture.

Coverage: current. the online version of the Europa World Year Book, covering political and economic information in more than 250 countries and territories.
Countries & Their Cultures
2001 ed. Focuses on cultures and countries around the world, specifically what is and is not shared culturally by the people who live in a particular country. Entries contain descriptive summaries of the country in question, including demographic, historical, cultural, economic, religious, and political information.
Encyclopedia of World Cultures
1996 ed. Lists and describes more than 1,500 global cultures. It is the one of the primary resources for historical, social, political, economic, linguistic, religious, and other information on most cultures. Additional cultures are covered in the supplement (which is a separate resource)
Encyclopedia of World Cultures Supplement
2002 ed. Lists and describes more than 100 global cultures not covered in the original 10 volume set. Users need to search both the original set and this supplement as there is not overlapping coverage.

Digital National Security Archive 
1940`s to present. A collection of declassified government documents, arranged into collections. Each collection, compiled by top scholars and experts, covers the most critical world events, countries, and U.S. policy decisions from post World War II through the 21st century.
Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) Daily Reports
Coverage: 1976-1996. Translations of foreign radio and television broadcasts, news agency transmissions, newspapers, periodicals, and government statements from foreign countries. Series 1 through 6 have been released. They cover Africa, Asia, East Europe, Latin American, and the Middle East.
New York Times -Proquest Historical Newspapers

IMF eLibrary Data (International Financial Statistics only)
Coverage: 1900-present. Provides time series data for balance of payments,banking, exchange rates, interest rates, employment, and other economic concepts. The Africa Portal is part of the Africa Initiative project and is foces on Africa's knowledge and capacity in six critical issue areas: conflict resolution, energy, food security, health, migration, and climate change.
