The newspapers, pamphlets, and books gathered by the Reverend Charles Burney (1757-1817) represent the largest and most comprehensive collection of early English news media. The present digital collection, that helps chart the development of the concept of news and newspapers and the free press, totals almost 1 million pages and contains approximately 1,270 titles. Many of the Burney newspapers are well known, but many pamphlets and broadsides also included have remained largely hidden.

1838-2001.  The Times of India is the world’s largest circulation English daily newspaper.  Founded in 1838 to serve the British residents of West India, The Times of India now circulates more than 4 million copies, covering almost 8 million readers. Originally this paper was British owned, but since Independence, has been owned by The Times of India Group. The Times of India is particularly valuable for its coverage of key historical events in India, including the rise of Gandhi’s Civil Disobediance movement, the 1947 Independence and Partition through to the landmark date of 1998 when Pakistan became a nuclear power.  Titles include - Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce (1839-1859), Bombay Times and Standard (1860-1861), and the Times of India (1861-2001)

The world’s top English-language daily newspaper covering Israel, the Middle East, and the Jewish World. Founded in 1932 by Gershon Agron as The Palestine Post, the publication supported the struggle for a Jewish homeland in Palestine and openly opposed British policy restricting Jewish immigration during the Mandate period. Coverage: 1272-1509. Reproduces the rolls of parliament, which were the official records of the meetings of the English parliament from the reign of Edward I until the reign of Henry VII with a full translation of all the texts from the three languages used by the medieval clerks.

The papers span the period 1520-1668, from the birth of William Cecil, Lord Burghley, to the death of William Cecil, 2nd Earl of Salisbury. Because of the importance of the Cecils, the materials offer crucial insights into the events of early modern history, including the marriages of Henry VIII, through the reign of Elizabeth I and the clandestine plans to facilitate James I/VI's accession, upon her death. Also covered in detail are overseas occurrences and interactions with other powers. Among the major events in English foreign policy addressed by these documents are the Tudor reconquest of Ireland, the Anglo-Spanish War, the loss of Calais to the French, and the early settlement of America.
